How did we get here?

My Humble Beginnings

That is me, at less than two years old, I'm in a photo studio pointing at something asking "Zat?" Photography has always interested me.

As a teen I auditioned for the visual arts program at Canterbury High School here in Ottawa. This is where I really got hooked on photography. I would spend hours upon hours in the darkroom. I was frequently late to science because I stayed after class talking to Mr Gamble, the lovable Irish photography teacher.

Cognitive Science

After taking a couple years off, I went to Carleton and studied Cognitive Science with a focus on visual perception. I learned all sorts of fun tricks we can play on our brains. If you have time to kill ask me about change blindness. But get comfortable, we could be here a while!

In 2007 I moved to Oakland, New Jersey, far away from my hometown of Ottawa, but only minutes away from New York City. After my girls were born, I practiced and honed my photography skills. I photographed everything. I was blessed to be able to stay home with them full time while persuing my photography freelance. I took all sorts of paying gigs in New York, San Francisco, and Los Angeles.

Opening a Studio

When we moved back to Ottawa I was hired to open and manage a commercial studio. Over the two years we were open I photographed thousands of people! In May 2018 the parent company shut down, closing our studio and hundreds of others.
This was the perfect opportunity for me to presue my own creative vision! Now I work for myself and my clients alone!

My Amazing Team

I couldn't do what I do without the rest of my team. Though they are small, they are my world.

It can be very hard to accomplish everything that needs to be done in a day at the best of times. As a single mom, I rely on these two to keep up with their chores and understand when I'm not available to play their favourite games or facilitate a crafting project. I'd be remiss to suggest that the work they do doesn't contribute significantly to my ability to do what I love. Plus I like to think I'm teaching them responsibility ;)

Reviews for Katherine Hoos, Ottawa Newborn Photographer

I want to share some of the kind words I’ve heard recently about me and my work.

You are crazy talented and your work speaks for itself – Jessica

I can’t say enough about Kathy and the incredible job she did for me and my son. Not only did she bring all of her supplies to me but I have never seen someone so comfortable and good with a newborn. As a new mom it was amazing not to have to leave the comfort of my home! I cannot recommend Kathy enough as a photographer! We will continue to turn to her as we keep hitting new milestones in the future! – Kelsey

Dear Kathy – I can’t begin to express how grateful I am for having found you as both a photographer and friend. You are by far the most talented person who has ever given us the gift of your time and creativity, and we are lucky to have you! When I asked you to do my own photos I was terrified and nervous, and you somehow made the experience not only fun, but empowering. I’ll cherish those photos always, as they marked a huge shift in my personal life and mindset. When you photographed my kiddos it was pure spontaneity, you saw them as they were, no poses or contrived emotion. You were always able to capture their spirits and personalities in the moment. They are who they are, and you are able to see and celebrate that. That is what makes for a memorable and forever photo. -Joanna
